Objectives

At the conclusion of the course attendees should be able to:

  • Understand how current practices in OB regional anesthesia have evolved based on new evidence over the last decade
  • Understand some of the medicolegal issues surrounding consent and labor, different variables which contribute to risk in the setting of obstetric anesthesia, and recent trends in the anesthesia closed claims database to improve delivery of anesthetic care
  • Update diagnostic criteria and pathophysiology, review pharmacological and nonpharmacological approaches, and evaluate acute and chronic pain management in fibromyalgia
  • Review efficient and cost-effective anesthetic choices for outpatient surgery
  • Participate in mini-case conferences derived from the files of the UCLA Surgery Center, using an audience response system to discuss clinical management challenges and solutions
  • Review the medical literature, giving the practitioner a better understanding of the history, mechanism, presentation, and management of systemic air embolization
  • Review current management strategies and new treatments for pulmonary hypertension
  • Understand some special circumstances in septic patients that might affect anesthetic practice
  • Learn about the evidence for and possible mechanisms of anesthetic neurotoxicity at the extremes of age, and to review its current investigation and highlight its relevance to clinical practice in vulnerable populations
  • Gain knowledge about the history, prevalence, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of PIS, as well as current issues of debate
  • Appreciate the role of medical simulation in the education and certification of anesthesia providers
Target Audience

Disclosures

The FDA has issued a concept paper which classifies commercial support of scientific and educational programs as promotional unless it can be affirmed that the program is "truly independent" and free of commercial influence. In addition to independence, the FDA requires that nonpromotional, commercially supported education be objective, balanced, and scientifically rigorous. The policy further states that all potential conflicts of interest of the CME staff and faculty be fully disclosed to the program's participants. In addition, Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education policy now mandates that the provider adequately manages all identified potential conflicts of interest prior to the program. We at UCLA fully endorse the letter and spirit of these concepts.
