Course Description

This workshop is designed to highlight the utility of ultrasound for all health care providers involved in perioperative patient care. The course will have two simultaneous educational tracts: (1) focused on the utility of point of care ultrasound for all aspects of perioperative care for non-cardiac surgery, (2) aimed on the review and training of basic echocardiography for cardiac and non-cardiac surgery.

Track 1: Perioperative Point of Care Ultrasound

This track will offer training on a "whole-body" ultrasound examination designed to expand anesthesiologists' skills with cardiac, pulmonary, abdominal, regional, and vascular ultrasound. The speakers have termed this examination FORESIGHT (Focused, PeriOperative, Risk, Evaluation, Sonography, Involving, Gastro-Abdominal, Hemodynamic, and Trans-Thoracic US). This examination has been designed by a multi-disciplinary team of emergency medicine, critical care, cardiology, and anesthesiologists, who have identified the key aspects of cardiac, pulmonary, abdominal, and hemodynamic ultrasound for perioperative care. Speakers will include the team members involved in the development and publication of the clinical utility of this examination. Attendees will gain insight on the utility of point of care during all aspects of the perioperative setting (preoperative, intra-operative, and post-operative).

Once registered, the participant will receive access to an iTunes university course and iBook that covers the course material. It is highly encouraged that the participants review this material prior to the course date.

Additional unique features include:

  • Instruction via a clinical validated simulation-based lecture series
  • More than six hours of hands-on training with live models and simulators
  • Course instructors who are academic physicians who have received grant funding and published on the course topics
  • Practical review of physics and ultrasound knobology
  • Pre- and post-training testing with review

At the completion of this track, participants should be able to:

  • Identify qualitative ventricular function, qualitative valve function, and tamponade
  • Assess endotracheal tube location, evaluate for pneumothorax, and assess severe air space disease
  • Assess gastric volume and perform a FAST exam - Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma
  • Assess volume status and central venous pressure
  • Review common regional procedures

Track 2: Basic Echocardiography

This track will offer training on the fundamentals of transesophageal (TEE) and transthoracic (TTE) echocardiography for cardiac and non-cardiac surgery. Topics for the track include: (1) valvular assessment, (2) qualitative and quantitative assessment of left and right ventricular assessment, (3) TEE for the cath/EP lab, (4) echo in the ICU, (5) rescue echo, (6) adult congenital assessment, (7) echo for hemodynamics, (8) echo for non-cardiac transplant, (9) echo outside of operating room, (10) echo for percutaneous valve procedures. Speakers will include a diverse team of cardiac and critical care anesthesiologists who practice in quaternary care centers.

Additional unique features include:

  • Instruction via latest simulators on echocardiography
  • Hands-on training with live models and simulators
  • Course instructors who are academic physicians who have received grant funding and published on the education of echocardiography to anesthesiologists
  • Practical review of an abbreviated 5-minute cardiac echocardiography examination
  • Pre- and post-training testing with review

At the completion of this track, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the basic utility of echocardiography (both TEE and TTE) for perioperative care
  • Highlight the utility of echocardiography outside of the operating room in the catheterization and electrophysiology suites

Target Audience

The target audience for this course is all health care providers involved in perioperative medicine (primarily physician anesthesiologists). The typical practice settings of our audience will be academic, private practice, and hospital-based groups.

Disclosures

The FDA has issued a concept paper which classifies commercial support of scientific and educational programs as promotional unless it can be affirmed that the program is "truly independent" and free of commercial influence. In addition to independence, the FDA requires that nonpromotional, commercially supported education be objective, balanced, and scientifically rigorous. The policy further states that all potential conflicts of interest of the CME staff and faculty be fully disclosed to the program's participants. In addition, Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education policy now mandates that the provider adequately manages all identified potential conflicts of interest prior to the program. We at UCLA fully endorse the letter and spirit of these concepts.
